Baking with Liqueur: Our Amaretto Cake is For Indulging
What’s actually behind the velvety-smooth almond liqueur that gives our cake this special flavor? Amaretto is made from apricot kernels, sometimes also from almonds or a mixture of both. The kernels are steeped in alcohol, where they infuse for quite a while, releasing their intense aroma. Add vanilla, herbs, and a touch of caramel and what you get is a true flavor explosion! The special thing is: Despite its sweet almond aroma, amaretto often contains no almonds at all! The typical aroma comes from the apricot kernels, which develop their slightly bitter note while steeping. Fun fact: “amaretto” actually translates to “a little bitter.”
Amaretto is a real highlight, we can only sing the praises of just what it packs in flavor: Sweet, almondy, slightly marzipan-like, with fine caramel and vanilla notes. It is simply perfect for desserts, cakes, and of course, neat over ice. In our amaretto cake, it provides an extra portion of moistness and this incomparable aroma that you can taste from the first bite.
Our recipe for amaretto cake is already a delight on its own. Of course, you can add other elements to the cake without overwhelming it. For example, with a little extra time, we like to add fluffy frosting made from whipped cream or a mascarpone, powdered sugar, and a dash of the liqueur. Amaretto and cherries are also a real simple dream team! Just add a few cherries to the batter and you’ll find that they are irresistibly delicious!
